The thing to note is that it is not the kick that is being ducked so it doesn't matter if you use a ghost kick track to duck the bass. So in a House track my ghost kick track will have no drops. Because you side-chain using the Send of the ghost kick the signal is passed through.įor example if you are side-chaining a bass to be ducked when a kick hits and you have a section where the kick drops out - your bass suddenly sounds different because nothing is triggering the compression. That way your ghost track plays back but no sound is being sent to the master bus. So in a Steinberg DAW you would use the Input and Output above each channel strip in the mixer and set Output to none. You cannot use mute because that silences the ghost track. I use "ghost tracks" - I duplicate the track that is triggering the compression and disable the track output of the duplicate so it is silent.
